Turning off the lights: the Galaxus Dark Mode

The single most requested feature from Digitec Galaxus customers over the years has been a dark mode. There are those who just prefer a darker screen, but there are also those who have visual impairments, to which studies have shown [1] [2], that a darker screen helps make content easier to read.

On E-Commerce platforms, it is unusual to see a dark mode, as such, there are no benchmarks to lean on, the only references are from mobile apps, and even then, support for it is not universal in the market.

Most think that creating a dark mode is just swapping light colors for dark colors, but this approach quickly falls apart when considering not only accessibility, but also the quality expectations we have for visual design.

When implementing an overarching change in a complex platform, it is not only about making the change, but also making sure you can support it in the long run.
